The United Workers Union of Liberia(UWUL) has complained the management of ArcelorMittal  for  excluding  local staff from the extra incentive given to expatriate the covid-19 lockdown.

UWUL in a letter dated June 1,2020, to the Ministry of Labor said since the outbreak of the pandemic, Arcelor Mittal  expatriates have been working from home while the local staff were risking their lives to ensure production.

UWUL ,however, called on the Ministry of Labor to ensure that every employee of the Company benefit from the hazard incentive to avoid problem at the Company.

The labor Movement said the action of the Management against the local staff amounts to some forms of injustice.

In response, the Ministry of Labor in a communication to the Management of ArcelorMittal dated August 7,2020 requested that all staff regardless of their status benefit from the provision of extra incentives during the COVID-19 period.

The Ministry said the fact that all workers of the Company remain on job in the face of the Covid-19, it was equally prudent that the local staff benefits the extra incentive as done in the case of the expatriates.

However, ArceloMittal letter dated May 20, 2020 to the workers’ local Secretary General Chea Brooks indicated that the cuts for the extra incentive allotted to the foreign workers were done from those who left the Country and could not return due to the outbreak.

The Management of the Company commended the local workers for their resilience to remain on job and ensure production during this covid-19.

The Management said the Company did not have extra allotment to incentivize the local staff.

In the face of the demand for incentive, the local workers are beginning to show signs of protest should Management fail to listen to them
