Liberia has called for an immediate ceasefire, stronger protection for civilians, and unrestricted humanitarian access in Ukraine, urging renewed diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Speaking during the 10,237th meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Friday, Liberia’s Political Coordinator to the Council, Prutus Sackie, outlined the country’s position on the situation in Ukraine and emphasized the need for strict adherence to international humanitarian law.

Sackie stressed the importance of safeguarding civilians and protecting essential civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, schools and humanitarian facilities, which are afforded protection under international law.

“We must strengthen the protection of civilians by ending attacks directed against civilians and civilian objects, ensuring full compliance with international humanitarian law, and facilitating safe, rapid and unhindered humanitarian access to those in need,” he told the Council.

Liberia also urged all parties to support diplomatic initiatives aimed at ending hostilities and achieving a sustainable political settlement.

Sackie called on the Security Council and the international community to intensify efforts toward an immediate ceasefire and a negotiated peace that is consistent with the principles of the United Nations Charter.

He said any resolution to the conflict should uphold the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and the peaceful settlement of disputes.

Liberia’s intervention comes as the United Nations continues to raise concerns about the humanitarian consequences of the war, including civilian casualties, displacement and damage to critical infrastructure.

The West African nation reiterated its support for a peaceful resolution through dialogue, underscoring the need for humanitarian access to affected populations and greater international efforts to protect civilians caught in the conflict.
