Concerns are mounting over overcrowding at Kakata Central Prison in Margibi County, where the inmate population is reported to have exceeded the facility’s intended capacity, adding pressure to an already strained correctional system.
The prison was reportedly designed to accommodate about 70 inmates, but officials and local observers say the number of detainees currently being held has raised questions about living conditions, security, and the administration of justice.
The issue has drawn renewed attention following a recent jailbreak at the facility, with critics pointing to overcrowding as a factor that may be complicating prison management and increasing operational challenges for correctional authorities.
Much of the concern centers on the growing number of detainees awaiting trial. Legal and justice sector stakeholders have called on judicial authorities to review pending cases, particularly those involving individuals who have remained in pre-trial detention for extended periods.
Under Liberia’s judicial process, accused persons are often remanded to prison custody while awaiting trial. However, delays in case proceedings can result in suspects spending months, and in some instances longer, behind bars before their matters are adjudicated.
The 13th Judicial Circuit Court continues to commit defendants to the Kakata facility as their cases move through the legal system, contributing to an inmate population that some observers say has exceeded the prison’s capacity.
Advocates are urging Liberia’s judiciary and other justice sector institutions to accelerate case reviews and hearings in accordance with the law, arguing that faster case disposition would help ease congestion in detention facilities while safeguarding the rights of accused persons.
The situation at Kakata Central Prison has also renewed broader debate over the use of pre-trial detention in Liberia and the challenges facing the country’s criminal justice system, including case backlogs and limited detention infrastructure.
